Where do I start?
If you are a beginner you may be wondering how should I start collecting? Where can I get ideas?

Try magazine subscriptions
Rocks and Minerals Devoted to collecting minerals, rocks, and fossils. Oldest in the nation. Been here since 1926
Mineralogical Record A bit more advanced. Geared towards the study and collecting of minerals
Lapidary Journal A gem and jewelry magazine

Try the internet
My Links Page Will give you some idea of what is out there.

Try some local museums:
Amhurst, MA Beneski Museum of Natural History

Try contacting local clubs

Try contacting mineral dealers

Try some books
One free source may be your local library

A beginner book that I like is Rocks and Minerals by Herbert Zim.  It is written for younger readers but has quite a bit of information http://www.amazon.com/Rocks-Minerals-Herbert-Zim/dp/B000NXI3B2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217100103&sr=1-5
